Local Foodies Get a “Twofer”

People in the metro DC area who love food will be in luck on Sunday, May 15, says Gazette.net.  There will be two different food festivals happening that day, one a brand new event and the other an annual favorite.  Folks from Bethesda, Silver Spring and all of the metro area should plan to attend.

The newcomer this year is Taste the World in Fenton Village, which starts in the parking lot by Highland Origin Coffee on Fenton Street.  Participants get a passport flier listing names and locations of the 21 participating restaurants in Fenton Village which they can visit for $5.00 tastings.  If you get your passport stamped by at least three of the restaurants, you can be entered into a raffle.

The organizers of Taste the World hope to make everyone more aware of what Silver Spring has to offer, including a wide range of restaurants such as African, Indian, and Ethiopian.

Now in its 16th year, The Taste of Wheaton is also a festival of diverse eating in the Washington, DC metro region.  This event is located in the Wheaton Triangle between Grandview Avenue and Reedie Drive, and participating restaurants are set up in booths.  Food samples at this event cost between $1.00 and $5.00.  There’s also entertainment such as puppet shows, face painting, and art displays.

Scheduling both festivals on the same date was an accident, say the organizers, but they hope people will see it as a double-dose of good food.

While the date for both events is May 15, the times vary at bit. Taste the World runs from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and The Taste of Wheaton from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  So much food, so little time!

For Earth Day, Flowers and Rain Gardens in Chevy Chase

As they have for the past 15 years, volunteers from the Chevy Chase Citizens’ Association have made things a little more colorful by planting flowers in tree boxes along the streets of Chevy Chase.  While it’s a nice touch for Earth Day, the Association actually keeps up the tree boxes throughout the year, says the Chevy Chase Patch.

At the same time, volunteers with the Friends of Rock Creek’s Environment (FORCE) were sprucing up a community rain garden that they planted three years ago. As in the tree boxes, rain garden plants help filter toxins out of the water that seeps into the ground—toxins that would otherwise flow to Chesapeake Bay. They also help lessen runoff water to the street during torrential rain storms.

The executive director of FORCE is encouraging Chevy Chase residents to also pick up litter lying in or near street gutters because when it rains this trash can run through the storm drain system and into Rock Creek.

Homeowners can check out this information on FORCE’s website to learn what specific things they can do to make their homes a little greener for Earth Day. There are also volunteer opportunities to help protect Rock Creek.

Edible Gardening in Montgomery County

If you’re a gardener in Bethesda or other Montgomery neighborhoods, plan to attend an upcoming program to benefit Brookside Gardens and the Montgomery Parks’ community gardens program.
According to an article on the Gazette website, Rosalind Creasy, a garden and food writer, will speak at Brookside Gardens on April 28 to talk about edible plants for local home gardens.
A plant sale will follow the presentation offering things such as standard vegetables and herbs as well as spices and ornamental edibles—plants grown for both decoration and food.  All the proceeds of this sale will help the community gardens program to purchase necessary items.
The number of area gardeners is sprouting, having doubled from 400 members last year to about 600 this year, and the community gardens have gone from one in 2009 to 10 in 2011 with plots still available in Rockville and North Silver Spring.
Here are the details of the Special Evening with Rosalind Creasy.
Date:  Thursday, April 28, 2011
Time:  6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
Place: 1800 Glenallen Avenue, Wheaton
Price:  $35.00

The plant sale dates are April 28 and 30.  Plan to attend this informative and fun program to benefit our local community gardens!

Washington, DC: History, Culture—and Scrabble!

People love Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and the general DC area for many things. It’s beautiful with lots of shops, museums, and other diversions. But did you know that this area is also the home of the D.C. Scrabble Club?

Over the weekend of March 19/20, the Club held a two-day tournament in Bethesda, where 62 nationally-ranked Scrabble players competed for prizes.  But for the participants, it was more about the competition than the winnings.

Organizers say that most players come less for the $300 prize and more for the chance to compete under pressure against other good players in a game of skill and chance. And winning doesn’t just come down to knowing the longest or fanciest words. More often it’s about strategy—how you play out those fancy words in the heat of the game.

If you’d like to see the official results of the tournament, check out the site www.cross-tables.com/scrabbleplayer.

For those who’d like to join, the Club meets on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 10:00 p.m. at the Chevy Chase Community Center, 5601 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, DC.

A Different Kind of “Rock Group”

There are always new and interesting things happening in and around Bethesda, but here’s something fun you should know about.

According to the Gazette web site, Montgomery County has a very special rock group—and there are no instruments involved. This group is the Gem, Lapidary and Mineral Society of Montgomery County, and for 48 years it has brought together rock enthusiasts both young and old.

Currently there are 175 adult members and 40 junior members that are age 18 and under.  There are even “Mini Miners” who are no older than age 9. Linda Smith of Bethesda has both her 13-year-old son and 88-year-old father-in-law in the club. Linda herself leads the Mini Miners group.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, the group will hold its 47th annual Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show at the Montgomery County fairgrounds in Gaithersburg. In addition to demonstrations and activities, the show will feature gems from Brazil and fossils from Morocco.

The club meets from September to June on the second Monday of the month at the Rockville Senior Center. To learn more about the club and the show, check out their web site at www.glmsmc.com.

This area is such a great place to live—there’s always something happening to suit any interest or hobby.
